At Stern, we live sustainably. Not just since it became trendy, but for generations.
In the past it was commonplace. Today, in a world of prosperity and abundance, it has somehow become something special. In the past, people didn’t talk about it, they just did it. Today, it is referred to as corporate social responsibility and expensive concepts are developed for things that should actually be done as a matter of course.
Our Stern philosophy, “I take care of you. You take care of me.” has been followed here for generations, right up to today and will continue on into the future. But we don’t want to shout it from the rooftops, instead we want to quietly continue in this way, unspectacularly and as a matter of course, incorporating this motto into everything we do here.
Energy
- 90% of our heat is generated by locally sourced wood chips.
- We are striving to reduce electricity consumption by 30% per overnight stay within the next 10 years.
Climate
- CO2 consumption per overnight stay was reduced from 12.53 kg to 7.59kg from 2010 to 2013.
- We donate EUR 2,250,- to international/regional climate protection projects on an annual basis and we are the only climate-neutral hotel in Austria.
Mobility
- Rail travel has increased for our guests from 0.5% to 5% – you also get a 5% discount for this.
- We offer a mobility package for guests with pick-up service, free buses, mountain bikes, eBikes, Electric Car, fast charging station for electric cars, …
Biodiversity
- The protected natural conservation area Larchwiesen („larch meadows“) is right on our doorstep and we maintain and preserve it, experience it and explain it to our guests.
- We promote awareness of meadow orchards, plant different varieties of potatoes to promote diversity, do fruit tasting tours, look after and protect protected alpine flowers, …
Consumption
- We offer water instead of cola, apples instead of chocolate, hay jumping instead of playing computer games, wind and weather games instead of sitting indoors, ski tours instead of heliskiing, …
- By playing the climate game, our guests can collect stars and learn how they can save CO2.
- We offer regional handcrafts in our small shop.
- We buy as much of our products as possible directly from regional producers and use regional food in all areas: every egg, yogurt, milk, bread, etc. comes directly from the locality.
- We cook regionally, seasonally and process everything with “Butz and Stingl” (Tyrolean for: nothing goes to waste).
Staff
- All our staff belong to the Stern family, and they enjoy regular working hours, 5-day weeks, regular and family-friendly working hours, opportunities for further training, bonuses, seasonal surprises, …
- We offer attractive apprenticeship training for the exciting hospitality profession which includes school visits, exam preparation, bonuses, … and also the integration of refugees.
