Tyrolean dialect for frequently asked questions! (FAQ)

In accordance with the Tyrolean inn traditions and due to our strong ambition to be good hosts, we want you to feel „huamelig“ (Tyrolean dialect for feeling at home) in our historical building. Lean back and enjoy the culinary highlights in our traditional inn and do not forget to attend our unique nature events.

In the following pages you will find a great collection of our personal STERN-Tips as well as information about our hotel and the idyllic holiday region it is surrounded by. We hope this will help you make the most of your stay. Alternatively, feel free to drop by at the reception where we would be more than happy to share our tips with you in person.

Welcome to The STERN Family Hotel

Rooms and apartments are available after 2pm. We take great pleasure in showing you all our facilities on your arrival, presenting you with your Emil-bottle (and the ski-tickets in winter), determine days for your room-cleaning and providing you with our insider tips for your stay. Many additional information and brochures you find at the reception.

Climate Check-in & Check-out

At your check-in at the reception desk you will receive a climate-questionnaire. Please take one minute of your time to learn how easy it is to actively participate in climate protection during your stay at STERN: e.g. when choosing your meals or planning activities. At the end of your holiday, please complete the questionnaire together with your family members and enter the data at www.hotelstern.at/kalkulator, using our carbon footprint calculator. You will be rewarded as a STERN-ambassador, and will be able to compensate for your CO2-emmissions produced at your trip to STERN/back home and will be handed over a certificate.

We recommend to do the climate check-out already one or two days before leaving the STERN, so that we are able to revise your data and resolve uncertainties.

We’d like to be on the first name terms with you

The Tyrolean people are known to be on first name terms with everybody. Even politicians are addressed with the familiar “du” in German. There is also a saying that over 1,000m above sea level your are automatically on first name terms with everybody. You will experience that yourself when on a hiking tour or ordering schnapps at a mountain hut. And that’s also the way we treat our guests at The STERN Family Hotel: we’d like to be on first name terms with our guests. That’s not a lack of respect, but Tyrolean tradition.

You can pay your bill at any time at our bar using an EC card, Visa or MasterCard (please be aware of your limits). We recommend paying all your bills on your last evening. Please don’t forget to bring back your Emil-bottle (and the ski-tickets in winter) so we can return the deposit. We respectfully request that our guests vacate their room by 11am on the day of departure so we can make sure to provide our next guests the same comfort you enjoyed.

Plateau-Card - your Guest-Card

In order to register for the Welcome Card we need your personal data, which we will handle with care. You will then be presented with your Welcome Card for the Innsbruck region (one card per person, not for small kids). The card allows you to enjoy the whole infrastructure of the Mieminger Plateau, such as regional bus transfer, Post bus transfer, cable cars and lifts (if you stay 3 days or longer), ice skating in Silz and parking in Arzkasten and Holzleiten. It also gives you access to numerous nature activities and several discounts (e.g. water park in Telfs, swimming lake and outdoor swimming pool in Mieming, Stams Abbey, cable cars in Innsbruck, indoor climbing area in Telfs, mini-train in Mieming, Greenfee at the golf courses of the region). Please carry your Welcome Card with you at all times as its barcode has to be swiped in order to give you access to all benefits.

In summer there’s the possibility to book the Welcome Card unlimited. With that one you can enjoy Highlights in our closer environment (Aqua Dome, Area 47, Elements 007, Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Stubaier Glaciers and ice grotto, castle Tratzberg and Achensee Shipping).

Tips & recommendations

We know our region very well and have been able to gain a lot of experience. We want to share this knowledge with you. Please, contact our reception desk in case of any questions or uncertainties. We are happy to help. You’ll also find a good tip on a message in your Emil-bottle.

In our little shop you can buy all kinds of hand-made souvenirs and regional products, e.g. funny T-Shirts and felt products produced by Kontaktil, “Alpenlarch” cosmetic products from the hotel’s own bio-cosmetic line, flavoursome arolla pine products (e.g. arolla pine drops for flavoured water or arolla pine pillows), Emil bottles in different colours, fine Tyrolean chocolates, beeswax tissues from kumanu from Silz, fruity things from Mairs Berries Garden, interesting books from regional authors, as well as pictures and paintings of our landscapes that you can also admire in our hallways. Moreover, we offer “Luna” picture frames made of driftwood by a South African social project, schnapps from Styria, Austrian wine or Tyrolean bacon, cheese and other products you enjoy at STERN.

The STERN and the larch – modern architecture in a historical building

Piece by piece we are trying to adapt the STERN’s historical walls to our modern times. In doing so we try to use modern elements and creative ideas to set architectural highlights, which also reflect a visible reference to nature, our region and culture.

Larch trees are a regional treasure and probably the most typical characteristic of Mieming’s sunny plateau. The wood from these trees is consistently used in the STERN: in our larch wood sauna, in our modern family rooms and for our “Sunnebankln” (sunny benches) on our southern patio.

Barrier (in)freedom in historical walls

Since the STERN is located in historical walls, it is not a perfect house for wheelchairs: up to the elevator there are two times 2 steps to overcome. We as the host family and all our employees are always happy to help with our help. Please note that the rooms on the 4th floor, the roof terrace and the panorama sauna are not accessible by lift, but by stairs. As a replacement for the public toilet in the basement, there is a toilet on the 3rd floor near the sauna area. We are also happy to reserve a larger room in which wheelchair users can move around easily.

There are plenty of parking spaces available in front of our hotel and on its east side. There is no need to worry about safety as Obsteig is still a very quiet location with hardly any crime at all.

If you have any complaints, please let either our staff or the Foeger Family know. This is very important to us, as this is the only way to get to know your needs and wishes. We will try our best to immediately correct our mistakes in order to make your stay a pleasant one.

Gschmackig – All about food

The STERN gourmet half board

  • Breakfast buffet with regional delicacies from 8am to 10am
  • Packed lunch for your hiking trip (in summer) at the breakfast buffet
  • Afternoon buffet (in winter) from 3pm to 4:30pm
  • Evening Menu of choice with salad buffet from 6:30pm to 7:30pm

For your evening menu you can choose from different main courses that are presented to you at dinner time the day before. In case our offers don’t meet your taste or you need a special type of food due to dietary reasons, please let us know. We are pleased to help.

Water Bar with Emil bottles

The water bar in the restaurant can be accessed all day for a drink of fresh water or to refill your Emil bottle. Fresh water flavoured with seasonal fruits and herbs is available every day: from lavender water to cucumber-ginger water and mint-berry water.

Put it on my bill, please!

You can charge any service you use during your stay to the room bill: your evening drinks, the inn bill, child care etc. Please sign your receipt before you leave the restaurant to guarantee that only your consumption is booked to your room.

Tyrolean Inn since 1509

The STERN is a centuries-old inn in the centre of Obsteig. Enjoy a glass of wine and seasonal delicacies in our old Tyrolean-style dining rooms, try grandma’s apple strudel on our sunny terrace with the adaptable “Sunnebankln” (Tyrolean for sun loungers) or enjoy a tasty bowl of ice cream “Unter de Keschtn” or in our shady chestnut tree garden, consisting of trees that are about 130 years old.

In our inn we mainly use regional products from local farmers and we try our best to offer seasonal dishes. Being part of the “Genuss-Wirt” association, as well as being a certified “Tyrolean Inn” reflects thesehigh-quality standards. Moreover, we mainly use products with the “AMA-Gütesiegel” (AMA Seal of Approval).

Breakfast in the garden

In summer you are welcome to have your breakfast outside in the garden. At the buffet you’ll find trays to bring your breakfast outside. Our staff will be happy to serve you there with hot drinks. In order to serve you a quality dinner, we thank you for your understanding that we can’t serve the half board dinner outdoors.

Room service

You are welcome to make use of our room service. Just order from our wide range of local drinks and specialities during the opening hours of our restaurant: breakfast from 8am to 10am, food and snacks from 11.30am to 9pm and drinks from 8am to 10pm. Please note that we charge a supplement of € 5,- for each room service order.

Our bar is open from Monday to Sunday. The boss himself serves you with beer specialities, fine drinks and local types of schnapps, gins and whiskeys and is looking forward to a little chat with his guests. In winter enjoy the cosy places next to the open fire place.

Non-smoking & smoking

The STERN is of course a non-smoking hotel. Therefore, we would like to ask smokers to smoke outside in the fresh air (e.g. in front of the hotel entry). At our hotel’s entrance area you will find ashtrays and you can also get an ashtray for your balcony at our reception.

Huamelig – Your room

Your key

Please leave your room key on its nail on the key rack at the reception. You are welcome to take your key from the shelf at any time. If you plan to stay out longer than 10pm, please take your room key with you. Your key opens the main entrance next to the chestnut tree garden as well as the two emergency exits.

Door hangers

On our door hangers we use the Tyrolean dialect and therefore they might be a bit hard to understand. “A Ruah isch!” means that you don’t want to be disturbed and “Geht scho!” stands for “Come in – ready to clean!”. If you want to take the door hanger home as a souvenir, you can buy it for €5. If you prefer not to have your room cleaned on a certain day, just leave the „A Ruah isch!“ sign up for the whole day.

Cleaning & Garbage

We would like to give you the full hotel comfort, but at the same time not cause any unnecessary environ-mental effects through cleaning. That’s why we ask you for the rhythm of room cleaning at your check-in.

Of course garbage is separated: for plastic, paper, glass and metal there are separation stations on each floor (or you put it separately in your room for our room service team). The rubbish bin in the room is reserved for residual waste.

Personal messages

We will make sure to forward any personal messages on to you as quickly as possible – either personally or by leaving a note on the key rack.

Cash and jewellery

You can deposit your valuables in the safe at our reception. Moreover, all rooms are equipped with a safe in the closet. For some safes you need a key from the reception desk. Others can be programmed with a number code. We are not liable for anything that goes missing.

Minibar & fridge

If you feel like having refreshments at your disposal in your room, we can provide you with a fridge or a minibar.

Alpenlarch cosmetics line & other personal care products

Together with Bio-Wellnesshotel Holzleiten we have created our own cosmetics line “Alpenlarch”. All products are dedicated to the larch tree, are biological, regional and handmade products. You can use the Alpenlarch soap in your bathroom and the Alpenlarch Hair & Body in your shower. We offer the whole range of products in our shop – from lip balsam to peeling products, massage oil and many more.

To avoid unnecessary waste, we have done away with small, single-packed cosmetic products. In case you need anything, we are fully equipped with shower gel and shampoo, body lotion, shower caps, nail files, cotton buds, cotton pads, tooth brushes, tooth paste, shavers, shoe cleaning accessories or nappies – just ask at reception.

Pillows, blankets and bedclothes

Good sleep is priceless. That’s why we offer you several options for your night’s rest: choose from relaxing pillows with Swiss stone pine stuffing, a warming cherry pit cushions or pillows and blankets that are allergy-friendly. Laundry & ironing

You are welcome to make use of our laundry service: Within 24 hours we wash and tumble dry your laundry (hand in before 10am). Costs: € 12 per laundry load. We also offer to iron your laundry, at extra cost per piece.

We kindly ask you to leave your room the way it was offered to you, and not to remove any items from the room in order to guarantee that future guests can also enjoy their stay. If you are interested in any of the decorative cushions, vases etc., please ask for further information at the reception.

In addition to the great selection of postcards that can be found at our reception, you will find two STERN Cards in your room, which you are welcome to send to your family. We will gladly pay for the postage.

The postage for other cards and letters can be paid at the reception (within Austria €0.70, within EU €0.90). This way it saves you going to our post office in the “Nah & Frisch Markt” in Mieming.

The instructions for your room telephone can be found in the hotel folder. For the outside line please dial 0, to get hold of the reception dial 64.

The television guide for all our 12 TV channels can be found in our hotel folder. If you prefer a TV-free room, please let us know. In our “Spielstube” (playroom) we have a flat-screen TV you can use anytime. A selection of kids’ movies and a DVD/Blueray player is available at the reception.

Books, e-books & audio books

On the fourth floor, in the sauna and chill-out area „Unter de Sterndl’n“ (Austrian dialect for “under the stars”), you will find a small library which you are more than welcome to use. At the reception, you can also borrow an Apple iPad to read an e-book or a CD-player to listen to one of our many audio books that you can choose from in the chill-out area. On the WIFI-welcome page you have the possibility to click “I mag di” (Like-button in Tyrolean dialect for Facebook) and to stay in contact with the STERN. At our reception desk you can borrow an Apple iPad to surf the internet (max. usage of 2h using a travel document or credit card as deposit).

Dogs & pets

It goes without saying that you can bring along your dogs, cats or guinea pigs. We would just like to ask you that you do not bring them to any rooms where we are offering a buffet. A day rate (food excluded) of €7 is charged for cleaning the room. If you take the dog for a walk, please use the dog waste bags which are offered in dispensers all over the village (in front of the hotel you can find the next one).

Gspassig – Family time

In the framework of our STERNCHEN Kids-Club (Sternchen is the German word for little star) we put together a great Nature-event-programme for the whole family every week. It could consist of exciting games like a treasure hunt, interesting trips like a visit to a farm or fire station or an adventure for the whole family. The latest programme for families but also the nature program for adults is available on Sunday evenings and will also be presented to you personally at dinner.

You are welcome to use our kids’ rooms on the first floor even after the opening times: our Indoor-Kids’play area for climbing, bouldering, craft work, painting, dance, play theatre, reading, watching movies, weaving and much more or you can use our family playroom on the ground floor for board games, chess and table football. Our Indoor-Kids’play area opens daily from 9am to 5pm and from 7.30pm to 9pm.

We kindly ask parents to accompany their children, to keep an eye on them when they are climbing and to make sure to leave the room tidy.

Petting zoo

In our barn at the back of our hotel, we have a petting zoo with ponies, pygmy goats and bunnies for our little guests. Children are welcome to pet and cuddle our animals under your or a member of staff’s supervision. (We kindly ask you not to feed our animals as they could get sick from eating the wrong food. Parents are liable for their children). Grandpa Toni feeds the animals in the late afternoon (from 5pm in summer or 4pm in winter) – all kids are welcome to help him. If you feel like taking a pony ride, you can borrow one of ours. We’ll saddle it for you and give you all the necessary advice. (€12 per pony/h). The best days are usually Tuesdays and Thursdays – Saturdays may also be possible. We offer guided pony-rides on Sundays between 1 and 3pm.

In the same place where you can spend a night in the hay barn everything is ready for action and adventure. Kids in the Sternchen Kids-Club can use the small high-ropes garden with balancing platforms and a group swing, the Flying Fox zip line and try out archery (only under kids-club supervision). Eardig – Sustainable holidays

I take care of you. You take care of me.

Our philosophy and our thoughts about sustainability are a key topic in this information brochure as it has been a topic close to our hearts for decades.

We were awarded the Ecolabel by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Food due to our following principles:

  • Using energy and water sensibly
  • Avoiding waste
  • Using renewable raw materials and environmentally-friendly products
  • Having staff that believe and act according to our principles.

The criteria are regularly checked by independent institutions.

Our environment

We are delighted that you have chosen to stay in our award-winning hotel. Because we are concerned about the environment and would like to preserve its unique character, it is our goal to actively support its protection. Please help us to guarantee clean air, clear water and healthy food by

KEEPING THE WINDOWS CLOSED, when the heating is on.

TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS, when you leave the room.

SAVING WATER by turning it off while cleaning your teeth and shaving and using the water saving push button on the toilet.

Letting us know when taps or toilet flushes leak.

LEAVING TOWELS on THE floor means you would like fresh ones!

AVOIDING and SEPARATING waste – we separate any waste that we collect from the rooms. You can help us by putting glass bottles beside the bin etc.

INFORMING US ABOUT REPAIRS – many defects can cause a great lack of resources. Therefore, please inform us about any kind of damages so we can repair them immediately.

"Green" arrival by train

Travelling by train spares the environment and reduces traffic on the streets. Even though it usually takes longer, it’s a much more relaxing way to travel and you’re guaranteed no traffic jams. We are happy to support all guests who travel to us by train by giving them a 5% discount on the total cost of their stay. We also offer free pick-up from Telfs and Ötztal train stations. In addition, we provide you with a great mobility package during your stay.

When you start it, it’s silent and there’s no smell. You’ll be surprised by the torque when accelerating. When you drive it, you get an idea of the range and the handling. Driving an e-car is quite an interesting experience. The Nissan eNV200 is available to test or also for your own mobility at any time (€45 for a half day, €65 for a whole day including charging). Please let us know one day in advance if you’re interested.

E-mountain bike rental

You can choose between different levels of power depending on your level of fitness or the steepness of the trail. This way you can significantly increase the range of your tour, reach alpine huts that you could normally only reach on foot or you can also easily pull the kids in a bike trailer (€24 for a half day, €31 for a whole day) AND: trying an e-mountain bike out doesn’t have to mean that you want to do things the easy way or that you have a poor level of Fitness.

Fein dunken – Time for relaxation

Music and entertainment

It is our pleasure to invite you one evening per week to enjoy Reinhard and his accordion playing local music. Exact dates and more on our culture programme can be found in our latest STERN-programme or in the weekly programme for the holiday region of Mieming’s Plateau which are both available at the reception.

Roof-top terrace “Kraftplatzl”

It is a real place of energy (“Kraftplatzl”) up on the 4th floor. Enjoy the most beautiful view of Obsteig: to the Mieminger Chain, to the church tower and into the expanse of the sunny plateau. Please never leave children alone on the roof-top. We prepared a fridge with cold drinks. Please feel free to help yourself – just note it down and let us know when checking out.

Panoramic sauna „Under the stars“

Under the stars on the 4th floor of the hotel we built a new, comfortable relaxation and sauna area. Enjoy the majestic views from this area to the mountains, hanging loungers, special showers and an up-to-date reading area with books, audio books and new Apple iPads.

iPads and CD-Players can be borrowed for max. 2 hours at the reception by leaving a deposit of a travel document or credit card.

In winter the relaxation and sauna area is open daily from 1pm to 7pm for people from the age of 16. On Mondays and Fridays it is family day and the sauna has lower temperatures which are also suitable for children who should only attend under supervision. If you would like to enjoy our sauna and relaxation area in the evening, we can offer the area to you exclusively.

In summer when the temperatures are high we switch the sauna on for you individually – please let us know 15 minutes before.

Massages & Shiatsu

Our therapists can offer a wide range of different treatments for your relaxation. Appointments for body massages, foot reflexology massages, lymphatic massages as well as Shiatsu (Japanese energy & body treatment) or aromatherapy treatments can be arranged in the sauna and relaxation area for mornings, or in your hotel room for afternoons (€35 for 25 mins, €60 for 50 mins). Our special tip: A seated shiatsu treatment on the roof terrace or in the herbs garden.

Sunnig – Enjoy the outdoors

Alpine flower and stone garden

We have started a very special project together with Dr. Cerny (Professor of Biology at the Innsbruck University). We have planted protected Alpine plants on the west roof of the first floor, and they can be seen from the larch rooms L. By using limestone, we have found a new natural home for edelweiss, gentian and platenigl plants. We ask you kindly to take care that nothing falls on to these beautiful plants and flowers.

Our STERN-gardens are very close to our hearts. In the farmers garden we cultivate our own vegetables; in the herbs garden we have fresh kitchen herbs, old traditional herbs and medicinal herbs. You can participate in a herbs tour with Elfi and learn more about our herbs and get to know how to use them. Please feel free to pick and enjoy raspberries and other tasty treats whenever you feel like it.

Sun beds

You will find sun beds on the sunbathing lawn behind the hotel. Covers for the beds are in the box at the Kids’ clubhouse. Please do not hesitate to ask for help at the reception.

Table tennis, basketball, badminton and football

You can play table tennis at the back of the hotel. If you feel like having a match, you can borrow bats and balls at the reception. We also provide you with basketballs and footballs, as well as rackets and shuttlecocks for playing badminton.

Pony Riding & Rent a Pony

You can go for a walk with our ponies Sophie & Marie as part of the kids’ programme or with your family on weekends – appointments are available for a small contribution towards expenses. You can rent a pony, lead it yourself and go for a walk. We saddle the ponies for you and give you all necessary tips. (€12 per pony/h) – Possible times are shown in the kids programme.

Regulars table & nature-programme

We are offering sunrise-tours with snowshoes and breakfast in the mountain-hut and a guided ski tour for beginners on a weekly basis in winter. And in summer you can enjoy a fruit and herbs-picking tour, a sunrise-hiking tour with transfer and mountain-breakfast, a relaxing e-bike tour, a fixed-rope tour or an ambitious hiking tour with our mountain guide. You will definitely experience memorable moments in the nature.

Please take the information about our special tips, the most beautiful tracks and unique activities form us personally at the reception.

Geocaching – GPS treasure hunt

Geo caching is a modern treasure hunt. You are equipped with a GPS receiver and the coordinates of a “treasure” to be able to find what someone else has hidden at a particular place (www.geocaching.com). If you find a treasure, you enter your data in the log and leave a small treasure you brought with you for the next treasure hunter. You can borrow GPS receivers at our reception desk and we also provide you with different treasure-routes. You only have to bring your own little exchange-treasure.

We tried out this kind of treasure hunt ourselves and were highly enthusiastic about it. It’s a perfect way to make hiking more attractive for kids and it’s a good example of how to combine nature with modern technologies.

Hiking stamp pass

Get your stamp pass at the reception and try to get as many stamps as possible on your hiking tours all over the Mieminger Plateau. For the hard walkers we keep hiking Pins.

A night in the hay barn

Fancy a night in a bed of hay? Just make a reservation for our hay barn in the larch meadows at our reception desk. We equip you with all the information, sleeping bags and camping mats and off you go to spend a night surrounded by nature.

Alpine-sleepover at 2,000m above sea-level

In the first two weeks of July we offer the so called Alpine-sleepover, which was rewarded “the perfect hiking holiday” by German hiking experts. In these two weeks we do a hiking tour to an alpine hut with you, put up some tents, collect a lot of wood for the fireplace and spend the night under the stars.

Treehouse or soapbox car building

Your time at The STERN Family Hotel should be special (for kids and adults alike). That’s why we have special programmes for specific times: for example, work hard all week on your soapbox car or treehouse and try out your masterpieces before your trip back home! Please check the STERN calendar in the magazine for times.

Hike through the meadows & latern-lit hike

Every Friday we hike to our hay barn in the famous meadows called „Lärchenwiesen“ in Weißland. In summer we hike together with our ponies along the forest and cook something tasty in a gigantic frying pan and in winter we hike with lanterns to the hay barn where mulled wine and music await us.

Fruit and herbs picking tours in spring and autumn

In spring and autumn you can find all kinds of herbs, fruits and other food in our surroundings. At www.mundraub.org you’ll learn about several places on Mieming’s plateau where you can freely pick what you encounter. Equipped with a picnic basket and a map, Elfi accompanies our guests to search for hidden spots (wild herbs, berries, elder flower, nuts or fruits) and you can take with you what you need for your own requirements. Together with Elfi you will have a look and taste what has been found, and also cook something in the new garden kitchen. You can also tag newly found places on www.mundraub.org.

Together with a local association, we initiated a regional climate protection project for meadows scattered with fruit trees. We want to promote free access to fruits to everyone. At the same time, we want to foster the traditional meadows with fruit trees that have been vanishing in the last years to promote biodiversity of regional types of fruits and to support our climate.

Be part of it ...

… gardening, picking potatoes, making hay or planting trees. If there is a special event or an attractive job to do, Elfi will let you know and you’ll have the possibility to be part of it.

Larchsteig – larch path

Going for a walk along the Larchsteig (a path through a larch tree wood) you plunge into the wonderful landscape of the larch fields. Information points provide you with interesting data and you can learn more about Obsteig’s typical Larchwiesn.

What else do you need on your holiday?

We have various bits and pieces at the reception for your perfect holiday:

  • Nordic walking and mountain hiking sticks
  • Climbing gear
  • Hiking rucksacks, thermo flasks, headlamps
  • Snow shoes, ski tours and avalanche equipment
  • Mountainbikes and eBikes

Larch bathing

Life seems to get busier and busier. So how can we get away from all the hustle and bustle? Larch bathing is a new idea in the STERN where you can enjoy the tranquillity of the larch meadows and the surroundings. No matter if guided by Elfi, independent with our Larchbaden bathing course tutorial or autodidactically… it simply feels good!
